Monument in Washington, D.C., designed by maya-lin. It consists of two low, black granite walls that meet to form a wide V shape. Engraved on the mirrorlike surface are the names of the more than 58,000 U.S. dead and missing-in-action who served in the vietnam-war, listed by date of casualty. When Lin's abstract design was announced, several veterans groups and others protested; eventually a traditional statue depicting three servicemen with a flag was commissioned, to stand at the entrance to the site. Since its dedication in 1982, the controversial wall has become one of the city's most visited and most affecting tourist attractions.
The Memorial was built with funds donated from corporations, veterans organizations and individuals throughout the United States.
Maya Ying Lin designed the Vietnam War Memorial and chose black granite for the walls. Over 58,000 names are inscribed chronologically by the date of casualty.
Maya Lin, the American artist, was born in Athens, Ohio, and today splits her time between New York and Colorado. She designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
AnswerDeliberately setting aside the controversies of the war, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial honors the men and women who served when their Nation called upon them. The designer, Maya Lin, felt that "the politics had eclipsed the veterans, their service and their lives." She kept the design elegantly simple to "allow everyone to respond and remember." http://www.nps.gov/vive/ http://thewall-usa.com/
You seem to be asking why Maya Lin was important, or why she was a leader in her field-- art. Maya Lin is a Chinese-American artist, architect, and sculptor, and she is best known for her Vietnam War memorial in Washington DC, but at first, she was not considered a leader in the art world. She was a 21-year old Yale University student who had won a competition to design the new monument. At the time it was created, Lin's design for the memorial was very controversial, but the families and friends of the veterans who had died in that war championed the monument, and it came to mean a lot to them. The monument was dedicated in 1982, a shiny, black granite wall that contained the names of the more than 58,000 members of the military who had died as a result of the war. It is one of the most visited monuments and still evokes a very emotional response, as people visit to pray and to see the names of their loved ones. People were grateful to Maya Lin for making sure the memories of Vietnam were not forgotten. So, while she was not considered a leader in the art world at the time, she certainly earned the respect of her peers and the gratitude of the many people who were comforted by the memorial she created for them. Today, she is a well-known artist and architect, and her work has been widely praised.
As legends be told, it was an artist by the name of Don Faast.
The wall is constructed from black granite imported from India. A "gash" is a long wound...a slash. Although "probably" never mentioned nor intended by the artist that created the memorial to represent a "gash", it none the less might be fitting that the wall is a black gash; the United States was wounded by the Viet War (as it had been wounded 100 years earlier in 1861).
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was designed by artist Maya Lin.

When the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial Wall went up in '82, the Women Viet Vets wanted one too, so they built the Women Vietnam Memorial next to it, "the Nurses". Then someone added the three "infantrymen" statue (Note: this is not in chronological order). Then someone didn't like the name "war" and the name Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall was accepted; Then the Korean War veterans wanted a memorial, so an artist was commissioned to make one; a squad or platoon of infantrymen (all standing) and walking on patrol; all constructed of bronze (?)...it's very different from many other memorials; appears to be of an original or at least a unique in concept design. Shortly thereafter, or around the same time frame, someone wanted a WWII memorial built...which was surprising; because most United States citizens always believed we already had one! The United States Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima! Turns out that was a monument to the Marine Corps; many people didn't know that (many probably still don't). So we built a WWII memorial too. But we shall save the best for last; the Vietnam "War Dog" Memorial (probably called "K9" memorial). There was talk of one some time ago; The US Army didn't keep records until after 1968 in Vietnam, but approximately 5,000 US military working dogs (war dogs) served in the war; about 10,000 US servicemen worked as "dog-handlers" in Vietnam, and 73 of them, plus 43 war dogs were killed in Vietnam. If "man" has to have memorials dedicated to him, certainly "his best friend" should have one too!
