The Linnaean system classified nature within a hierarchy, starting with Kingdoms which were divided into Classes, divided into Orders, divided into Genera, divided into Species. The Linnaean system of scientific classification is widely used in the biological sciences, and the expansion of knowledge has led to development of the number of hierarchical levels within the system (phyla, family, subclasses, etc.) and there has been an increase in the administrative requirements of the system. It does remain the only extant working classification system that is universally acceptanced by the scientific community.
