The most common direction of winds really depend on where you live.

If you live in the United States, the winds and weather would come out of the west most often, we would call those winds westerlies. However, if you live closer to the equator, the direction of the winds and weather would most often come out of the east.

The prevailing winds are influenced by the Earth's rotation and usually blow from west to east in the mid-latitudes. However, wind direction can vary depending on local weather systems and topography.

The direction of the wind is named from the direction from which it comes and not the direction it is going.

So a Westerly wind, is coming from the West.

Stand with your face into the wind. It is easier to fine tune the direction by feeling the pressure on both ears.

When you are facing the wind, this is the named direction. (check with a magnetic compass).
