PRIDE and ARROGANCE.

A lot of people are afraid to commit mistakes simply because they have the idea at the back of their minds that their answers are a part of who they are. it is usually accompanied by the feeling of shame and an immediate self-defense thought that "people might think I am an idiot...".

this is relatively natural. this explanation provides the answer why in class there are a lot of students who are afraid to raise the answer while being also uncertain if it is right or wrong. it is then clear that somehow it is related to intelligence.

talking about intelligence, there is nothing more closely associated to it than by science, a field that requires analytical and critical thinking.

in science, being a scientist myself, is not a discipline of mastering what is already there. it is more defined, by our ways, as a never ending quest for truth about our universe. aside from mastering past knowledge, the most important aspect is to generate knowledge; the reason we have graduate schools.

as i want to emphasize, science is a quest for truth. in doing research, one might discover the answer to a question never been answered before. but it is in our history, that a proposed answer, is always replaced by a better answer, or your answer be proven wrong by some. if a scientist will be ARROGANT and PROUD, then imagine how will it be if Newton never admitted his mistake about his theory of universal gravitation that was proven not working on large scales? Einstein prove him wrong. then maybe up to now we are like audiences watching two cocks fight each other. by that way we would never move forward. Aristotle's time was the hardest since in that time people have an agreement that he is always right. Galileo galilei prove one of his works wrong. what did he have in return? imprisonment. The nobel prize for physics and chemistry requires discoveries to be "tested by time" because they themselves know that answers gets unproven sometimes along the way. to avoid shallow awards, an answer must be accepted for decades, (atleast 20 years) which by then can be concluded as the final answer because it is working.

to make it short, (oops! sorry for a lengthy answer), unavoidance to accept mistake will create unnecessary debates that prohibits us from moving on. that is why humility is important, not only in science but in any endeavour as well.
