The five extra days were added to the original 360 day calendar for the birth of the children of Nut, god of the sky, and Geb, god of the earth. Re (Ra,Ray), the supreme god of Egyptian mythology, forbade Nut to have her children on any of the 360 days of the year. So, Nut gambled with the moon god for moonlight. After she gained enough moonlight for 5 days she added them onto the year creating a 365 day year. These 5 days are called the demon days and on each of them a child of Nut was born.

A calendar is a list of days of the year. There are 365 days in a normal year so a normal calendar has 365 days. In a leap year, which occurs every 4 years, there is an extra day added so there are 366 days. That extra day would fall on the 28th of February

Earth takes about 365 and one quarter days to circle the sun once (one year). If we only had 365 days on the calendar, eventually the calendar would be WAY off from the seasons. By adding the extra day every four years, it keeps the calendar in step with the earth's orbit, and thus with the seasons.
