Dutch were the first to settle in the present day Delaware in 1631 in the middle region near the area of Lewes. However, all the settlers were killed within 1 year. In 1638 Swedish colony was settled at New Sweden site which lasted till 1955 when a Dutch force conquered the New Sweden colony.
