What is the scientific name for lower leg?
Of the two bones in the lower human leg, the tibia is the longer
and the fibula is narrower. The tibia is the main weight-bearing
bone and the fibula allows the rotation of the foot. The tibia is
also called the shin bone.
If you are eating a chicken drumstick, the tibia is what you are
holding. The fibula is that little splinter of a bone that runs
about 2/3 of the way down.
Tibia is Latin for "flute" because long hollow bird tibias could
be carved into flutes...you might be able to make a piccolo out of
a chicken tibia.
