Coffee, per se, is not considered a "clear" liquid, you cannot see through it. However it is allowed on a clear liquid diet by the fact that is does not have any particulates. If cream or milk is added to the coffee, then it is no longer a clear liquid. Milk products produce a curd in the acidity of the stomach, therefore, creates solids. My answer is based on my studies as a Registered Dietitian, and practice in patient care for 5 yrs.
