It is, at least at the core, much of the time. But it is a paradox, since someone may choose a painful way to die and bravely face that, while running in fear from social pressures, family troubles, their own emotions, loss of loved ones, heartbreak, social troubles, financial troubles, legal troubles, or whatever. Emotional pain is often more debilitating than physical pain.

Some do turn to suicide for reasons other than just cowardice, fear, guilt or grief. Some are idealists or propagandized into supporting a cause, like terrorists for instance. Some might attempt suicide so their family can collect insurance money on their death, and stage it to look accidental or like homicide.
