At first lightning is electric but when it strikes the energy converts its self into light and heat in which the lightning becomes visible. There is a law of energy stating that: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed in form. Some various forms of energy might be chemical, nuclear, electrical, mechanical, heat, and waves/radiation (light). Lightning does not create energy, it simply transforms its type of energy and transfers it to another object, whether that object be air, a cloud, ground etc.
