It is legal to own a domesticated hedgehog in most states of the U.S.A.
For your own area, it would be best to check with your local Fish and Wildlife service.
In the UK:
It is illegal to take a hedgehog from the wild and keep it as a pet.
It is legal to keep a specifically bred African Pygmy Hog as a pet but......
it is illegal to abandon it in the wild assuming that it can cope as well as the wild species.

Yes, they are legal in the state of Illinois.

To find out this information call your local animal control office. They will have information on your states laws.
yes
African Pygmy Hedgehogs are the most common breed, but their is no illegal breed, as long as hedgehogs are legal in your state, country, or province. ^^
Yes they are but please don't buy one from a pet store. Most pet stores do not get their hedgehogs from a good breeder. They usually buy them from people who breed hedgehogs way too often. This leads to genetic disorders within the blood line. So if you do wish to buy a beautiful hedgehog, buy him or her from a reputable breeder. :)
