Police agencies are not supposed to disseminate false information to the press or anyone else. If the police department was aware the information was untrue and released it anyway, there could be grounds for civil or criminal penalties. However, if the information was believed to be true at the time of the release, the department could claim it was acting in good faith and be held harmless.
