earth's atmosphere is thick If it were thin we would not be able to survive. It use to be very thin before human life then a volcanic eruption caused the atmosphere to become thick with the gases released from the eruption. The atmosphere protects us from UV rays from the sun and metoroids. It also keeps temperatures not to hot or to cold.
