Thailand responded pragmatically to the military and political pressures of World War II. When sporadic fighting broke out between Thai and French forces along Thailand's eastern frontier in late 1940 and early 1941.
Thailand is a kingdom - an absolute monarchy - Thailand is not a democracy. Its head of state is King Bhumibol (Rama IX). Occasionally elections are held in the country but if the King does not like the result he immediately banishes that government. After the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 2016, his son King Maha Vajiralongkorn ascended to the throne. The country has experienced some political changes and social unrest, with an increased focus on stricter enforcement of laws pertaining to lese majeste (insulting the monarchy) under the new king. Thailand continues to grapple with political divisions and challenges to democratic governance.
