Spanish is an ancestry, describing someone as Spanish indicates they or their ancestors are from Spain. Hispanic is an ethnicity which is a self-identified cultural affiliation typically used to denote people who associate themselves with cultures from Spanish speaking areas, ie. Spain, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico and other parts of Central and South America. It is also important to note that neither of these designations are equivalent to "race".
