Do you remember what "NATO" stands for? It's the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Israel is not in that region. However, Israel has been part of the "Major non-NATO allies" since that list of five non-Atlantic countries was created twenty-five years ago. Other nations were added much later.

Israel is not a NATO member. It does however a major non-NATO ally so it has special benefits as such.
