Yes, the entire region of the Indian sub-continent or South Asia was administered and governed by the U.K. as a colonial possession. This began with activity of the British East India Company, that had been a trading company formed when Queen Elizabeth I granted it a charter in 1600 A.D. for a term of 16 years to launch trade in the East Indies. The Company began to control extensive territories in 1757, beginning with the provinces of Behar, Orissa and Bengal. A mutiny/revolt erupted against the Government of the East India Company in 1857 was suppressed ruthlessly. Afterwards the British parliament conducted a prolonged debate over the circumstances of India and decided to take over its charge in 1858. The East India Company was liquidated and Queen Victoria became Empress of India. India remained a British possession until 15th August, 1947 when Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy and Governor General of British India presided over its partition into Muslim Pakistan and Hindu India, both initially becoming members of the British Commonwealth of Nations.
