The cigarette that Johnny was smoking fell onto the floor while he was sleeping, which actually led to the church burning down. You can actually check out the scene in the movie on YouTube. You're welcome! :)

I have no seen the movie, so I can't disagree. But in the book, the children playing in the church caused it. We were discussing it in class, and we remembered it said that johnny and ponyboy had smoke in the back of the church, but the fire had started in the front of the church, because the children were in the back. You also gotta remember that there were most likely matches in there, and children sometimes play with them and don't put them out.

In the book Johnny wasn't at the church.-_-
