The cigarette that Johnny was smoking fell onto the floor while he was sleeping, which actually led to the church burning down. You can actually check out the scene in the movie on YouTube. You're welcome! :)
I have no seen the movie, so I can't disagree. But in the book, the children playing in the church caused it. We were discussing it in class, and we remembered it said that johnny and ponyboy had smoke in the back of the church, but the fire had started in the front of the church, because the children were in the back. You also gotta remember that there were most likely matches in there, and children sometimes play with them and don't put them out.
In the book Johnny wasn't at the church.-_-

The book The Outsiders never says how the fire definitely started but Johnny does state that one of their cigarettes must have started it. As for where it happened, the fire started in an abandoned church on a hill in Windrixville.
in chapter 6 the

The irony of the fire is that Ralph kept insisting that the fire will get them rescued and Jack didn't care, but in the end, the fire that Jack started was the fire that got them rescued.
The fire in "The Outsiders" occurs near the end of the book, during the rumble between the greasers and the Socs. Johnny and Ponyboy end up saving children from a burning church that was set ablaze during the fight.
