Mungo Lady was discovered by geologist Jim Bowler during the 1960s. He came across her bones when he was studying the layout and geology of the huge complex of fossil lakes in southwest New South Wales in what is now the Mungo National Park.
At the time, Bowler was particularly interested in Lake Mungo because the nature of the landscape and the way erosion had weathered the lunette (a crescent-shaped, fixed dune) enabled him to study at depth the ancient layers of sediment. While investigating ancient deposits of windblown sand and clay witin the lunette, Bowler identified freshwater mussel shells and objects which apoeared to be stone tools. After observing what looked like burnt bones , he elicites the assistance of some archaeologists. In 1969, archaeologists John Mulvaney and Rhys Jones sifted through the bones and identified a human jaw. Thus was found Mungo lady.
Lady Rose - Mungo Jerry song - was created in 1971.
Lake Mungo is important for its fossils, and "Mungo Man" and for "Mungo Woman". It is also important for the fossils of megafauna and animals.
Lake Mungo is significant to Australia because of it's discovery of Mungo Man and Mungo Lady. They are Australia's oldest human remains to be found, being 40,000 to 42,000 years old.
MUNGO PARK discovered the mouth of river Niger
It is often said that it was MUNGO PARK who discovered river Niger; however we all know that is as true as saying Spiderman invented trafic lights. Who was the first European to discover river Niger? Mungo Park. Who discovered river Niger? I dont know but i think my bet would be that it was a member of the community that lived in the region of the river Niger. I mean there were communities that fished in the Niger before Mungo Park was even born. It was a mystery to the outside world until the Scottish explorer Mungo Park came across the river in June 1786.
Mungo Park discovered River Niger because he was sent by the 'Association for Promoting the Discovery of the interior of Africa 'to discover the course of River Niger'.
