It all depends...I play Saxophone for weddings and corporate events. I get paid around $175 to $250 an hour with the average gig lasting around 2hrs. However, I only have around 1 to 2 gigs a month. Guess you could say I'm a part time musician. I do have friends that work in the music industry full time and have decent lives making around 40k to 50k. Unless you get "discovered" or become the next great one hit wonder music can be a very tricky business to base your livelihood on. I always say, do it for fun, for passion but have a day job too so you won't be stressed...:) Just my perspective...Make music, inspire others...
There are union positions in the music industry. This is for example a violin player in a orchestra. he violin player would typically make a specified rate for each hour played or rehersing in the orchestra. The violin player also then agrees to play wherever requested for this union. If the player doesnt answer a specified number of call in a row, a they will be removed from the unions listing, and replaced with another player. Or The violin player could work with a number of recording studios and play violin for someone elses album, this means the violin player needs to market him or her self, and get a demo tape, and photographs, wita resume of places she has played violin. Thirdly the player could release their own original work and try to sell their own cds with original music. Yet another option is the violin player could be a teacher and sell lessosns to other players that want to play violin, for a specifed rate per lesson. The violin player could also write music for violin, or repair violins if he/she is talented. The answer to your question is tough, if a musician is willing to travel in a union touring as professional they can make a meager living.
Depends on lots of factors:
It depends on how well-known of a musician you are. If the drummer has had his own band before that was reasonably successful he would make more money than a brand new drummer. But they probably make about 2 or 3 thousand per concert, which adds up if they're a regular crew member.
