The guinea was made of gold, and originally it was set at 1 pound sterling (now just known as a pound, or "GBP". Currently (Sept 2009) 1 GBP = 1.6 USD. Around the same time as the movie, the price of gold increased dramatically, and therefore the price of a guinea became worth much more than 1lb sterling.
For simplicity sake (just to get a rough idea of the monthly payout for Redmond Barry) , using today's conversion (and assuming one guinea was still about one pound sterling), 600GBP today = $800USD today.
