The value of anything is worth whatever someone will pay you for it.
Depending on the state in which you wish to value silk -- raw silk, cocoons, spun silk yarn or thread, woven silk, and so forth -- the value will vary based on quality and usability.
It depends on where you buy it. There are lot of different types of silk to ranging in price. It would be best to just go a a fabric retailer and see the price range there. It could to shop around before actually purchasing something. If you want to know the average price it would be about $30.00 per square foot at a resonable price- but because you haven't said what type of silk and the quality you need I can't answer that to exactly.
Yes, it depends. I am from China, the silk town--tongxiang city. We have the most traditional silk fabric making process with best quality and best prices. There are lots of different levels of silk. So if you are interested, you can ask me: wayne19770101@Yahoo.com
If you mean "in the Middle Ages" or another long-ago period, it's hard to say because you have to relate that price to the cost of living at the time. "15 dollars an ounce" - for just the thread! - sounds perhaps reasonable until you realize that this is equal to half a month's wages for a labourer. A finished product - requiring much, much more material than 1 oz. of thread, plus labor etc. - might easily cost him more than several year's wages.
A few other comparisons from the Middle Ages: that price for 1 oz. of silk thread would have bought you either 6 gallons of beer, more than a gallon of lamp oil, almost 2 lb. of (expensive) wax candles, 100 US pints of wheat or 6 lb. of tin plate.
silk usually cost around $30.00 per square foot it also depends on the type of silk..
