Firefighting is a Professional trade. (personal opinion)
There are Schools that train Firefighters but most large departments have their own training facility and train the firefighters to there own syllabus.
There is North American, USA and Canadian standards for this training but these are guide lines.
A Firefighter will attend a intensive course provided by the city who has hired him/her. They normally then serve as a Firefighter for a locally determined probationary period. (90 days to a full year on the job)
They then are considered to be professional firefighters.
From there Firefighters can attend courses to upgrade their knowledge and gain promotion.
OfficersTo become a senior officer or run a Fire Department a College or University degree in Public institution Management of some kind would be required for most Cities.
There are specialist Firefighters, oil Field, industrial, military and these will follow a similar system of training.
Volunteer Fire FightingFinally the void of the volunteer department.
Volunteer Firefighters do what the "PROS" do for little or no money, taking on the riskiest job in North America sometimes with out the benefit's. All because they believe it is something that needs doing.
Some have virtually no training and money to maintain equipment and so on.
Some volunteer departments operate in large cities and are among the very best.
If you live in an area serviced by a volunteer department, please support them in their money raising and improvement activities.
