What was James Madison's childhood like?

James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, was born in Port Conway, Virginia, on March 16, 1751, to Colonel James Madison Sr. and Eleanor Rose "Nellie" Conway. He was the oldest of twelve children, seven of whom reached adulthood. His parents were slave owners and the prosperous owners of a tobacco plantation in Orange County, Virginia, where James Madison spent his childhood years. He was raised in the practice of the Church of England. Madison's plantation life was made possible by his paternal grandfather, Ambrose Madison, who utilized Virginia's headright system to import many indentured servants. And like his forebears, Madison also owned slaves. Madison attended the College of New Jersey (Princeton University), finishing four year courses in two years. He was called "America's first graduate student" or "Princeton's first graduate student". He married a Dolly Payne Todd on September 14, 1794. She was 17 years younger than he was. Dolly was largely credited with inventing the role of the First Lady as a political ally and adviser to the president. They did not have any children of their own. Madison was also known as the Father of the Constitution. He was the president in office at the time of the War of 1812. He left office in 1817, and retired to Montpelier, his tobacco plantation. On June 28, 1836, James Madison got stabbed at the age of 85.
