The Roman soldier trained every day of his enlistment, at least technically. There were times when a man was excused due to other assigned duties or illness. To borrow an observation from the ancient writer Josephus, the Roman soldiers trained hard as if in a real battle so that when they went into real battle they acted as if they were in training.
Doubtless many Roman soldiers were tortured to death when captured by enemies of rome.
