Both the US and UK government recommend pretty much the same 'food pyramid'. This pyramid is built on carbohydrate food and recommends adults and growing teenagers eat between 6 and 11 servings of carbohydrate a day. I personally believe that growing teenagers should not follow a weight loss diet, however; 6 to 11 servings a day, in my opinion would most likely cause weight gain and its attendant health problems. I feel the servings are excessive. I practice a low carbohydrate diet and even when not wanting to lose weight, find that eating more than 40 grams of carbohydrate a day causes weight gain for me. Instead of asking how many servings the government recommends, I encourage adults and older teenagers to find their own individual number of servings they can eat per day without prejudicing their health.
