In 1967 the Secretary of Defense disclosed that the US had 7,000 nuclear warheads in Europe. Prior to this announcement, the European host nations knew where these warheads were and so did the Soviet Union. The US Congress was the last organization to know this fact. Government secrecy under US President Lyndon B. Johnson was a government priority.
