This is all dependent on the author. Writing takes time and effort. being an author you can always expect to run into writers block. It also depends if the author has an agent or a publisher they may have deadlines. Basically being an author, you could expect to have long hours sometimes. Though if you want to work for a newspaper, magazine or some other publication, you would most likely have pretty regular office hours..like nine to five. But you would still have to deal with deadlines and if you didn't have anything written and turned in on time you'd most likely be fired.
