There are quite a number of Baptist organizations today. The main governing distinctive of these churches is that they hold to the autonomy (independent rule) of the local church. Therefore some of the groups have organized because of location. Others have developed over controversy, as had happened in other groups considered as denominations: Presbyterians, Methodists, Lutherans, etc.

For a further picture of much of the Baptists groups & churches, see the Related Link below: "What is the difference between Southern Baptists and other Baptists churches?" On that site also is resource below to a number of Related Links that reveal more about Baptist churches.

There are dozens and probably hundreds of Baptist organizations around the world. Strictly speaking, it is difficult even to talk about Baptist "denominations"; most Baptist groups function as conventions or associations of churches, without a strong central church government. This is because a fundamental characteristic of Baptist churches is the autonomy of the local church. However, it is possible to talk about distinct "denominations" or conventions among Baptists. In the USA, the largest is the Southern Baptist Convention, which broke off from the original Northern Baptist Convention (now the American Baptist Churches USA) in the mid 1800s over the issue of slavery. Top among prominent Baptist conventions and associations in the US are the historically black Baptist groups: National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.; National Baptist Convention of America; and Progressive National Baptist Convention. There are also the Landmark Baptists (American Baptist Association), Conservative Baptist Association of America, National Primitive Baptist Convention, North American Baptist Convention, General Association of Regular Baptist Churches, United Free Will Baptist Church, Baptist General Conference of America, and North American Baptist General Conference. This list is limited to US Baptists, is far from inclusive of the smaller groups, and it does not encompass at all the multitude of independent Baptist churches across the nation. Worldwide, there are a multitude of Baptist conventions and associations specific to various countries and regions, as well as global or national groups with member congregations, such as the Baptist World Alliance and Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
