According to the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer Owner Guide :
Both the 4.0 liter V6 engine and the 4.6 liter V8 engine have the Electronic
Distributorless Ignition System ( EDIS )
So , on the 4.0 liter V6 ( 1 coil pack with 6 towers ) and on the
4.6 liter V8 ( 2 coil packs with 4 towers on each )
A 2002 Mercury Mountaineer has the Electronic Distributorless Ignition System ( EDIS ) With the 4.0 L , V6 engine there is ( 1 ) coil pack With the 4.6 L , V8 engine there is ( 2 ) coil packs
I believe it has ( 2 ) because the ignition system is EDIS ( Electronic Distributorless Ignition System ) on the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer V8
A 2004 Mercury Mountaineer does not have the Coil On Plug ( C.O.P. ) ignition system with ( 8 ) individual coils . It has the Electronic Distributorless Ignition System ( EDIS ) with ( 2 coil packs ) and ( 8 ) spark plug wires
On a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer , with the 5.0 liter V8 engine : There are ( 4 ) spark plug wires going to each of the ( 2 coil packs ) ( 4 - 7 ) ( 3 - 5 ) ( 8 - 2 ) ( 6 - 1 ) front of vehicle ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The engine cylinder locations are numbered : firewall 4 - 8 3 - 7 2 - 6 1 - 5 front of Mountaineer ( V8 )
A 1997 Mercury Mountaineer - 5.0 L ( 302 cubic inch ) V8 coil packs are numbered : ( 4 - 7 )-----------( 3 - 5 ) ( 8 - 2 )-----------( 6 - 1 ) ------------front---------- The engine cylinders / spark plugs are numbered : firewall 4 - 8 3 - 7 2 - 6 1 - 5 front of engine
Actually it doesn't have a distributor , it's EDIS ( Electronic Distributorless Ignition System ) and has ( 2 ) coil packs at the front of the engine that are controlled by the powertrain control module ( PCM )

Check the coil or coil packs if equipped.
I don't know if the 2003 have 2 coil packs. But I do know my old 1998 ford expedition XLT (4.6L) Had two coil packs in front on the engine. One on each side of the block.
