Most cultivated strawberries have a diploid number of 56(2n = 56), which means a haploid number of 28 (n=28).

There are a number of wild species of strawberry, all belonging to the genus Fragaria. They have a basic chromosome number (sometimes denoted by x) of 7, but there are multiple sets in many species. As a result, some species have a diploid number (2n) of 14, some 28, some 42, and some 56.
