Florida currently has 17 telephone area codes:

  1. 239 = Ft. Myers
  2. 305 = Miami
  3. 786 = overlay of 305
  4. 352 = Gainesville, Ocala
  5. 386 = Daytona Beach, Lake City
  6. 321 = Melbourne, "Space Coast" (321 only) andoverlay of 407
  7. 407 = Orlando
  8. 561 = Boca Raton, West Palm Beach
  9. 727 = St. Petersburg
  10. 772 = Ft. Pierce, Port St. Lucie
  11. 813 = Tampa
  12. 850 = Tallahassee, Pensacola, panhandle
  13. 863 = Lakeland
  14. 904 = Jacksonville
  15. 941 = Sarasota
  16. 954 = Ft. Lauderdale
  17. 754 = overlay of 954

In the original area code assignments in 1947, all of Florida was area code 305. It has split and split and split again, to the 17 area codes now in use. Area code 321 is unique, because it is the only area code for one area (the "Space Coast," including Cape Canaveral), but also an overlay area code for an adjacent area (including Orlando).

As of June 1, 2013, there are 293 area codes in service in the 50 states, plus 1 for DC and 6 for various external territories of the United States (Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands), plus 10 more that are scheduled to be added in the coming months. There are 36 area codes for Canada, and 20 for various other island countries and territories in or near the Caribbean. In addition, there are 14 special non-geographic area codes, including the 8YY codes for toll-free numbers and other codes.

  • U.S. (50 states plus D.C.): 294
  • U.S. territories: 6
  • Canada: 36
  • Other countries: 20
  • Non-geographic (shared by all of the above): 14

That's a total of 370 area codes currently in service in North America.

Note that calls from the USA to Canada or the other countries (Bahamas, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, etc.) are dialed "one plus," just like domestic long-distance calls, but international charges will apply.

As of August 2014, there are 306 regular geographic area codes in the United States, including US territories but not including non-geographic codes (e.g., toll-free 800/888/877/866/855/844 numbers) or area codes used in other parts of the North American Numbering Plan (Canada, plus various island nations and territories in or near the Caribbean).

The country code for North America (USA, Canada, etc.) is +1. Florida has several area codes; you need to be more specific. As of 2014, the area codes in Florida are: 239, 305, 321, 352, 386, 407, 561, 727, 754, 772, 786, 813, 850, 863, 904, 941, and 954.

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.).
