Of the six million or so Jews who perished in the Holocaust:

  • About 1.5 million are estimated to have been killed in mass open air shootings, mainly in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Latvia.
  • At least 250,000 thousand were killed by the Romanians in their own national holocaust. (This did not involve gassing).
  • About 800,000 were worked to death, died from disease and starvation or died of ill treatment or were beaten to death.
  • About 3 million who were killed by gassing.

One needs to add to this other categories of victims, but most of them were killed by means other than gassing.

This depended on which extermination camp the chamber was located in. At Treblinka, perhaps 200 people could be placed in a single chamber. In Krema II or III at Auschwitz-Birkenau, as many as 1,500 could fit into a single chamber.

How were people gassed in the holocaust?

About 3.5 million were gassed. There were a few methods of gassing the Jews. One was the gas vans, which was when the Jews were forced into hermetically sealed vans, and then exhaust gas from the engine was led into the chamber. The Jews were thus suffocated. Then came the gassing at the camps which was one of the most effective killing methods was by forcing Jews into gas chambers, where they were gassed to death using Zyklon B (and to a much lesser degree exhaust fumes). The victims were forced into the gas chamber, the door was closed and either exhaust fumes-gas was fed into the room, or or Zyklon B crystals were dropped in. In the extermination camps at Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka exhaust fumes were used, while Zyklon B was used in Majdanek and Auschwitz-Birkenau.

A scientist observed changes in the gas pressure of one mole of a gas in a sealed chamber with a fixed volume To identify the source of the changes the scientist should check for variations in what?

The scientist should check for variations in temperature, the number of moles of gas present, or the nature of the gas molecules (e.g., size, shape, mass). These factors can affect the gas pressure in a sealed chamber with a fixed volume according to the ideal gas law.
