The B17, B24, and B29s were the heavy bombers of WWII. The B52 was the heavy bomber of the Vietnam War.

They escorted the bombers to provide them with protection, sought out attacking enemy bomber forces and their escorts, provided ground support, provided fleet protection and attacked targets of opportunity every chance they had.
World War II Bombers were used for many different tasks. Their main task was to interupt, destroy or make the enemy's ability to conduct war impossible. But they had other roles, dropping supplies, reconnaissance, rescue, and many other roles. The main heavy bombers for the US were..B-17-Flying Fortress B-24 B-25--Medium Bomber B-26 Maurder B-29 Super Fortress..These are the planes that dropped the Atomic Bombs on JapanAnswerEven if it sounds stupid... they were used for bombing. That means, only bombing and transports. Even the B-17 wasn't strong enough to defend itself against air agressors without cover. So... if you have a look a modern military jets... bombing, intercepting,... all that together... impossible for any ww2 bomber. The dog-fight or intercepting role was taken by smaller fighters... but there were smaller bombers, too. Think of the German Junkers Ju 87 (Stuka), bombing small targets with high precision. Answer :most bombers were solw and not very well armoured so normally were escorted by long ranger fighters there were also medium bombers like the B-25 Mitchel bomber and there were fighter/bombers and dive bombers like the junkers and the mosquito which were fighter sized planes that could drop small bombs on a target then dogfight with enemy planes but they were mainly designed as bombers so they werent very good at dogfighting.
All US jet fighters such as the F100 Super Sabre, F102 Delta Dagger, F104 Starfighter, F8 Crusader, F4 Phantom were ultimately used as fighter BOMBERS. The F101 Voodoo was used primarily as a reconnaissance jet. The A7 Corsair was designed, built, and deployed in the 1960's directly into combat in Vietnam. The F105 Thunderchief was designed as a fighter/bomber, the largest single engine jet bomber in the US inventory and the only such jet that could carry an atomic weapon completely concealed within it's fuselage. Only 833 F105's were built and nearly 400 of them were lost in the war, consequently the F4 Phantom took over much of the Thud's duties. Traditional US jet bombers used in Vietnam were: B57 Canberra (twin jet engines); the A6 Intruder, US Navy all weather medium bomber; and the B52 Stratofortress heavy bomber (eight jet engines). The US Navy A4 Skyhawk and the USAF F100 Super Sabre saw extensive action in the war which is reflected in their losses: 362 A4's were lost, and 242 Super Sabre's were lost in the war. The propeller driven single engine A1 Skyraider also saw alot of action, 266 were lost in the war. Probably the most un-sung jet fighter (bomber) was the F100 Super Sabre; it fought from 1962 until 1971. Conducting bombing missions in Laos, Cambodia, North Vietnam, and South Vietnam. The F100 has unfortunately been heavily overshadowed by the F4 Phantom...as have been most of the other US jet fighter bombers.

Depending on it's exact role and which air force, the B-24 was crewed by 8 -11 airmen.

Airplanes fell into a number of catagories based on their function. Fighters Aircraft that were tasked with destroying the enemies aircraft. Later in the war the widespread addition of bombracks expanded their roles and they became fighter-bombers. Examples P51, P47, Me109, Spitfire... Dive Bombers Very popular before the war they were supposed to provide precision tactical bombing. Later replaced by multi-role aircraft.Examples JU87 and U.S. SBD. Tactical Bombers Early in war their were dedicated light bombers. Later most fighter aircraft were set up to do the job. Although the Germans and Russians both developed highly specialised variants of their dive and level bombers that worked in a tank busting role. Medium Bombers Usually two engined bombers that provided heavy tactical support to front line armies. Examples B25, B26, HE111. Heavy Bombers Usually 4 engine bombers whose main mission was to obliterate the enemies infrastructure. Examples Lancaster, B17, B24, B29. Transport Military cargo and civilian transport planes fell into this category. Recon Small single engine spotter planes and two engined high speed Mosquitoes and P-38's were seme of the planes that fulfilled this mission. Early in the war planes were differentiated by narrow roles, torpedo bombers, dive bombers, level bombers etc... Later in the war multi-role aircraft were developed. The Avenger was an aircraft developed for the US Navy that eventually took over the roles of dive, level and torpedo bombing.
The B24 was the Liberator flown by the US in WWII.
B24 is the 105k scheduled maintenance for this vehicle It is: Timing belt replacement Water pump replacement tire rotation oil change engine air filter replacement cabin air filter replacement
Presuming you mean the Consolidated B-24 WWII bomber, then it was known as Liberator.
