Hi, after a lot of reseach and many conflicting information I had the wonderful experience of renewing my green card. The whole process took a little over three months. I have to congratulate the USCIS for such an efficient job. I was surprised to see how fast the process moved. My new green card arrived on the day my old one expired, though it had been extended for another year. Start you procees as soon as possible and good luck.

It takes 4-6 weeks on the regular but; if expedited it can be only 2-3 weeks.

I suggest if planning to travel during SUMMER months. Handle all passport

business during the fall or winter so there is no back up. Because during Holiday and SUMMER months a lot of people are trying to travel and have to renew their passports. Am sure you don't want to be left out and be the only one at home while everyone's on VACATION.

If it is a passport from the country you currently reside in (I.e. a US citizen replacing a US passport), it will take between six to eight weeks. If it is a foreign passport from your birth country (in which you do not currently reside), it can take between two and three months. Also, be aware that the photo requirements for passports are quite strict. Hope this helps.

Currently, it takes about 10-12 months to receive your new Green Card. Your temporary proof of status will be valid for one year.

When you bring your application to renew your Green Card in person to the USCIS office, be sure to bring your passport, if you have one -- or bring one additional photograph so that a temporary document (a stamped Form I-94 with photograph) can be created and issued to you immediately.

If you present an expired passport the USCIS will stamp it; however, it will not be acceptable for employment verification purposes. You may present to your employer an unexpired stamped passport or Form I-94 with photograph, or any of the other documents listed on the USCIS Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form). If you require temporary documentation for employment purposes, be sure to inform the USCIS officer of this fact.

The renewal process depends on the completeness of the application ( I-90) and also the documents that are submitted for proof. In case the submitted proof is not sufficient, then the USCIS will send a RFE ( Request for evidence) notice which will delay the processing of the application. So it is advisable to file in the I-90 well in advance( not before the mentioned timeline) before the expiry of the Green card.

Completed Form DS-82 should be mailed along with the current U.S. passport for renewal. It will take four to six weeks to receive new passport through special post.

What does a permanent resident card expiry date mean?

I think you are refering to green card. You need to renew, here's how:The Application FormThe only way to renew your expiring Green Card is to file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. In the meantime, if you need confirmation of your status so that you can work or travel, you can make an appointment with your local USCIS field office through Infopass to get a temporary I-551 stamp on your passport until your new card arrives. This temporary proof of status is good for one year and that's good since it may take that long to receive your new Green Card. Now, if you are a conditional permanent resident who has a two-year green card and your Green Card is about to expire, DO NOT use Form I-90 to renew your expiring Green Card. In that case, you are required to file a petition to remove those conditions within 90 days of your card expiring by filing Form I-5751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence. If your conditional status was based on a marriage, you must also file Form I-5751.
