Although Professor Hawking experienced some symptoms prior to his diagnosis, such as pain when rowing, or clumsiness and tripping observed by his family, he received his diagnosis at age 21. He has been living with the condition for over 50 years as of 2014.

Since it is hereditary, he has had it his whole life. The 'symptoms' began to show when he was in college, about 50 years ago.
