Particularly shorter time periods in the wild, due to loss of habitat, poaching for bushmeat and sale as pets. Additional Information: The average age for a Chimpanzee, or maybe better known a "Chimp", in the wild is around 40 years old, most don't live past that age. While the average age in captivity is 60 years old, or slightly older. There are rumors of older Chimps, but they are questioned. For more details, please see sites listed below.

Most modern chimpanzees that we view in zoos and preserves have never lived in the wild , so their behavior are what they acquired in their environments, no need to forage for food, much more socializing. Those in the wild must lock down food and shelter before socialization.

Chimpanzees rarely live past the age of 40 in the wild, but have been known to reach the age of 60 in captivity.

Two chimps associated with the "Tarzan" role of Cheeta are still alive, and alleged to be 70 to 80 years old (born 1931 or 1932). There is no way to reliably ascertain their true ages.
