What makes poetry slam different from poetry?
A poetry slam is a meeting and competition between poets who perform their own original modern work. The competition is typically held in a coffee house or small stage venue, but there are large annual nationwide competitions with audiences of thousands. The poetry at a slam is not necessarily different from that of 'regular' poetry, however, due to the nature of a poetry slam competition, often the poetry is more stylistically similar to a well composed rap, delivered emotionally and powerfully, rather than a recited couplet. This style is typically referred to as 'Spoken Word' type poetry, because the poems are meant to be received as a stage performance of the author rather than seen on the page, although there is often crossover.
