Depends on what you want it to do. I have a 10 - 12 yer old laptop loaded with a free Lunix OS and software, and it's fast because the OS is small. We travel with it and use it for navigation, internet, word processing, photo imaging (professional level), etc. You can't run modern games on it as neither the memory or processor can handle it. It does everything else I require of it.
So before you decide if your laptop's obsolete, ask yourself if it does everything you want it to.
BTW, I also have a laptop so old it doesn't have a CD drive - strictly floppy. It's a great word processor and has some of the old games on it. Still hooks up to the Net. I have no idea what version of Windows it's operating with *grin*. No reason to throw it out, though. My son used it as a journal untiil he went off to college.
Laptops are constantly being updated and with the release of new models, can quickly become outdated. In general, a laptop can be considered an old laptop in about two to three years.
For me, the laptop price has price range from $500 to $1000 dollars is nice to have. I have one dell laptop from couple years and they still not outdated and work nicely.
That would be counter intuitive, buy a laptop with a fast processor in the first place.
It is probably because your laptop isn't fast enough. I have a laptop that is at 1.333 GHz and that wasn't fast enough. It worked for the first time but then not after that. There is nothing you can really do.

On an outdated 7 year old laptop running Windows XP, you will be lucky to get $125. Take $100 if someone offers it.
It is not neccessarily the type of laptop as it is the type of network card installed in the laptop, the speed of your network provider, and the type of Service you have with that provider.
HP 402018-001 AC Adapter will charge your computer pretty fast.
It will not have as fast a processor as a larger laptop, most of the time not as good a graphics card, and a smaller screen.
