They can't escape. They depend on their thick fur and black skin to survive and live on fat from the seals--and sometimes small whales and walruses--that they kill and eat on.

Quite frankly, polar bears actually thrive and live for the cold. They would much rather escape the summer tundra than the cold winter of the Arctic.
