In actual practice, we begin our Shabbat a short time before sunset (on Friday) and end it after twilight on Saturday. This is done for several reasons and is a little longer than the actual Biblical day of Sabbath.

For me the Sabbath day begins at 6am on saturday and my Sabbath day ends at 6pm Saturday evening, this is the equivalent of one whole day as a day has only 12 hours (remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy)
If your Sabbath begins at 6pm on Friday and ends at 6pm on Saturday that is a total of 24 hours! The bible also says that no man can work when night comes. sleeping at night is what we do anyway so what is there to gain from that?
