The shark in the first movie was killed by an exploding air tank that it swallowed while attacking chief Brody. The shark swallowed the the tank and Brody shot it with a rifle and blew it up. It should also be noted that show mythbusters tested whether or not an air tank would blow up if was shot. According to the show they said it would not blow up. Only the air rushed out the bullet hole of the tank.
