how to top up a transmission on e39 BMW
Look under the hood to the drivers side of your car, there will be a black jug with a top on it with the letters (ATF) This is were the power steering fluid is checked and filled. Note: This is not the transmission fluid fill spot. There is no way of checking the transmission fluid except by lifting the car up and opening the nut that is connected to the transmission.
You can add transmission fluid, by using a funnel. Place the funnel in the same to of which you check the transmission fluid. Do not over fill the transmission.
and automatic transmission does not require tranny fluid, as it is a "manual" and not automatic
What model and year is your BMW? On BMW's there is no way to check the transmission fluid except by getting the car on a lift and opening up the drain plug and sticking your finger inside. Check your transmission lines, on many cars, they are often leaking fluid and it will get to a point where there is not enough fluid to get the torque converter working. The transmission fluid lines are almost exclusively located on the drivers side frame rail, under the air box. If you have seepage at the ends, then you need your lines replaced and your transmission oil cooler replaced also.
Power steering fluid or Automatic transmission fluid
There is the transmission fluid stick under the hood near the block twords the back of the vehicle take out the stick and fill it up allow about 5 min to let it all drain down so when you dip it will not show all over your stick, run the vehicle and then check the fluid level with clean dip stick. You are welcome BMW POUWWA !
The car has to be lifted up and on the transmission pan there is a plug that has to be opened. Note: the Fluid can only be pumped in with a pump. There is noway of pouring it in. It is considered fulled when the fluid starts to come out after being pumped in.
Just pull out the dipstick, feed the tall, narrow transmission fluid funnel into the dipstick tube and top up as required.
that all depends on the color andhow dirty it is! if it is darker then normal, change the fluid and filter. if it is ok and no problems. just top off the fluid. but if you have shifting problems, just change fluid and filter in transmission. this may be the cause,
It depends on whether or not it is a manual or auto-tragic transmission. Either way it's a relatively simple process of removing a bolt on the bottom of the transmission case and then use a pump to add fluid. There is a full write up on pelican parts.
Depends on the transmission it has. If it has a GM transmission, there may be a dipstick in the engine compartment. In that case, with the car at operating temp pull the stick, wipe it off reinsert it and remove it again. Measure the amount of fluid from the base of the stick, if filled correctly, the top of the fluid will be between 1 and 1-1/2 inches from the base of the stick. All others require you to lift the vehicle and check it via the check-and-fill plug on the transmission or pan. Start the car without fully warming up the engine, remove the plug, then see if fluid runs out. If no fluid runs out, the transmission is low. Never allow the transmission to warm up fully while checking it, or you'll get a bad reading on these types of transmissions. Note: All 1993 BMW 325s use regular old Dexron III trans fluid. Nothing special is needed.
