A horse in labour shows some predictable signs. They are not the same for every mare and will depend on her temperament and how experienced she is with motherhood - a mare that has foaled several times will generally be calmer than a first or second time mother. Signs that a mare is beginning labour: * Out of character behavior - nerviness, moving away from other horses. * Pacing the stall or paddock and returning to a particular spot. * Sweating or becoming lathered without excessive physical effort. * Signs of discomfort in belly area ie kicking at underside, staring at flanks. * Desire to be near people or sometimes to stay away from them. As her labour progresses she may lie down, get up, move, and do this several times. By the time she starts straining in earnest, the foal should be born within an hour. If it has not arrived, you should call the vet.
Things to look for are signs of the rump and tailhead muscles softening. This helps to prepare the pelvic area to stretch during labor and foaling. The vulva may also become swollen and elongated. Be aware of changes in the mare's behavior. This may indicate that foaling is imminent. Mares who behave more or less affectionately than usual, try to separate themselves from other horses, seem more nervous, may be nearing the start of labor. Also, loss of appetite is an indicator of approaching foaling. Foaling generally occurs between 10pm and 4am, so if a mare that normally eats well is uninterested in her dinner, she may be close to delivery. Mares also have individual patterns that they go by when they foal.
There bag will swell and yellow to white sticky stuff will drip form their teets and their belly will drop due to the baby going into the foaling position. Some mares become angry and want to be left alone during this time. When they ar near foaling they will either nip or look at their flanks and make their nest or paw at the ground.
If your pony is in a stall, it will start to pace, kick at its stomach and start to sweat. Mares that are close to going into labor are usually very stressed, so they will be very loud. If you notice your pony lying down or their water breaks, they are in labor. Horses are pregnant for 11 months, so if it is around this time, and you are not experienced, call your vet and ask them to coach you through. Horses usually deliver by themselves, with no help from people, but it is a good idea to stay on the phone with your vet in case any complications arise.
Well the pony would likely not be coming into heat each month as it previously did. Also at some point in the pregnancy the mare would develop a 'foal belly'. To confirm the 'diagnosis' you should have a equine vet come out and give the mare a rectal exam where they will be able to feel around in the mare and see if she is truly pregnant or not. If the mare is pregnant and not too far along then you can decide whether or not to keep the foal, if not the vet can 'pinch' the fetus.
