There's different ways to get an accent over a letter. One of them is the cryptic code where you hold down alt then press certain code to a certain type of letter or sign with an accent over it. For instance to put an accent over an o type in alt+0243 ó. On a make there's also codes, but it's different from the cryptic way-á = Opt + e, then a
é = Opt + e, then e
í = Opt + e, then i
ó = Opt + e, then o
ú = Opt + e, then u
For the ñ, hold down the Option key while you type the n; release and type n again.
ñ = Opt + n, then n
To place the diaeresis over the u, hold down the Option key while pressing the u key; release and type u again.
ü = Opt + u, then u
The inverted punctuation marks are achieved as follows:
¡ = Opt + 1
¿ Opt + shift + ?
In MS Word you use the Ctrl and Shift keys in combination with the accent and the letter. So, for an acute accent over e, it's Ctrl + ' + e. For a grave accent over the letter a, it's Ctrl + ` + a. For a tilde over n, it's Ctrl + shift + ~ + n. For an umlaut over an o, it's Ctrl + shift + : + o. For some others (like for macron over vowel), you have to go to the Symbols tab under Insert menu.

In English, and French, there is no accent mark attached to the word, "genre." It is pronounced just was written in both languages.
It goes on top of the letter "a". According to the rules of accentuation, the word árbol is a "grave" word. This means it is a word where the major force during the pronunciation falls over the before last syllable, which in this case is "ar" (the word árbol has two syllables: AR - BOL). You have to place the "acento" if a grave word ends with any letter that IS NOT "n", "s", or a vowel. Arbol ends with l, so it has to have the accent. Hope this helps
To place a mark above the letter "n" in Spanish words, use the tilde (~) called "virgulilla" in Spanish. This mark indicates the pronunciation of a nasal sound. For example, in the word "maΓ±ana," the tilde goes above the first letter "n" to represent the "ny" sound.
