Usually it is in a 2x4 wall. Take two 2x12's the right length and put a strip of 1/2 inch thick plywood between them. Nail through from each side at regular points alternating the spacing on each side. This ties everything together. The plywood and the different grains of the 2x12 give it more strength than the parts separately.

good answer above. make sure to crown both 2x12's in the same direction and adding construction adhesive to plywood before nailing all together gives it even more strength. Install it with crowned side up naturally!

On a deck what would be the maximum spacing of 2'X12' floor joists on a 20ft span?

Even using a 2x12 the spacing for 20 feet will be less than 12 inches on center. I would recommend splitting the distance with a double beam perpendicular to the joist run. This will allow you to go up to 24 inches on center. Your span will only be ten feet aproximately this way. I would double the beam. (2-2x12 joined together) Good luck. when building your beam make sure the laps on the beam are at least 6 foot apart and put a good wood glue on the 2x12s plus for added strength put 1/2 inch O.S.B. in between the 2x12 and I would also lag or bolt them together, at about 16 to 24 inches O.S.B. = Oscilating Strand Board.

Calculate the end bearing length for a 10 inch by 16 inch timber beam if the beam reacion is 15000lbs and the compressive stress is 300psi?

You need at least 50 square inches of bearing (at least 2x6 wall for a 10" wide beam). You also have to make sure to have proper pad below and enough studs (of filled cells) in the wall to accomodate the load.

How do you make beam balance model?

you can make a beam balance by putting a coloum in the centre of the beam

How to smaller laser beam?

To make a laser beam smaller, you can use optical elements like lenses and mirrors to focus the beam. By adjusting the focus point, you can increase the beam's intensity and make it appear smaller. Additionally, reducing the divergence of the beam using apertures or beam shapers can help to keep the beam focused and compact.

How do you make a beam out of one piece of paper to hold a lot of weight?

You can roll the paper into a cylindrical shape to increase its strength and load-bearing capacity. Alternatively, you can fold the paper multiple times to create a thicker, more durable beam structure. Experimenting with different folding and rolling techniques can help you find the most effective way to create a strong beam out of a single piece of paper.

When blowing a bearing dry with compressed air what precaution should be taken?

If it is a sealed bearing, make sure not to blow your seals out, if it is just a race bearing then you should have nothing to worry about. On a tapered bearing, hold in in such a way as to prevent it from spinning. The force of the air can make the bearing fly apart.

What is a Laminated Beam?

A laminated beam is a beam that is made of thin layers of a material (Called lamina). An example is glulam beams, which are thin layers of wood glued together to make a large beam.

What is the definition of ball bearing?

A ball bearing is a stainless steel ball used in 'bearing races' to make a full bearing unit. Vet common in all machinery construction.
