How do you dial an extension number?

In most cases, you first dial the main number. If an automated system answers, you will be prompted to dial the extension number.

For example, to reach (318) 555-0123 x 7838, you would first dial 1-318-555-0123, and then, after the automated system answers, dial the extension number 7838. If a human operator answers, you can just say, "Extension 7838, please."

For the example number of 828-555-0102 extn. 582, this is what you would do:

First you dial the main number, 828-555-0102, as you would any other.

When the call is answered there are two possibilities:

• An automated message will prompt you to dial the extension number you require, at which point you dial 582 or
• A real person will answer, who you can ask to transfer you to extension 582.

If you are within the same company or campus telephone system, just dial the extension number. If you are calling in from the public telephone network, you may dial a main number for the company and then at a separate prompt dial the extension number, or there may be a way to dial a unique public number that corresponds to the specific extension: for example, extension 123 might be dialed as 555-0123 and extension 178 as 555-0178.

On most telephones, you press the buttons with the numbers in the same order as the telephone number. On telephones with a round dial with holes in it, you place your finger in the hole over the number you want to dial and pull the dial around until you hit the metal stop, then remove your finger and let the dial return to its starting position; repeat the procedure until you have dialed the full telephone number.

Dial the international number. When it answers, you should get either a receptionist or an automated phone system. Either ask for or punch in the extension number.
