Mushrooms get there energy primarily from the decomposition of dead plants and animal matter. A common misconception is that mushrooms go under photosynthesis. Mushrroms, like other fungi, lack chloroplast (the key organelle in phtosynthesis) and cannot produce glucose ( main form of energy) from photosynthesis.

The type of food that Mellow Mushroom serves is pizza. The Mellow Mushroom is a vegan pizza joint that also offers bread appetizers as well as drinks like beer.
The mushroom sends out very fine white filaments, known as mycelium. Spreading out over a wide area through the leaf-mould, the mycelium allows the mushroom to get food by breaking down the leaf-litter.
