== yes a lot Answer: A properly constructed and operated landfill does not create an environmental impact howerver poorly constructed landfills may have several problems and impacts. * Decomposition of organics in the anaerobic conditions in landfill can create methane gas, a powerful greenhouse gas which is also very flammable. The methane can escape to the air or follow pores in the soil to nearby buildings where it can build up to explosive levels.

* The leachate from a landfill contains numerous liquid pollutants suc as acids, organics, dissolved metals and high BOD material. It can leave a poorly controlled landfill and comtaminate groundwater and surface water.

NOTE: Leachate is material that dissolves out of a solid mass, like tea out of a tea bag, when water flows through it.

It is considered when it has completely degraded biologically, chemically and physically. In high-income countries, the level of isolation achieved may be high. However, such an expensive high level of isolation may not be technically necessary to protect public health. Four basic conditions should be met before a site can be regarded as a sanitary landfill (see following.) The ways of doing this should be adapted to local conditions. The immediate goal is to meet, to the best extent possible, the four stated basic sanitary landfill conditions, with a longer term goal to meet them eventually in full.
