MALAYSIANS in Melbourne are now able to swap a plane ticket to Canberra for a tram ticket to St Kilda if they want to renew their passports. Sumisha Naidu reports.

Unbeknownst to many, Malaysians in Melbourne are now able to renew their passports at the Malaysian Consulate-General in St Kilda, saving them a trip to the High Commission in Canberra to get the job done.

Applicants can have their passports renewed within three weeks for a $120 processing fee.

No appointments are necessary with walk-ins accepted at the consulate between 9.30am to 12pm from Mondays to Fridays.

Despite the service being offered since July 2011, many Malaysians were unaware of it due to the consulate's temporary set-up at Malaysia Hall in Windsor and a general lack of publicity.

But last December, the consulate moved into its official residence at St Kilda.

Now the Melbourne Consulate-General is fully operational, processing birth and marriage registrations, renunciation of citizenships, tourist visas and holiday visas to Malaysia, and translations of Malaysian driving licenses in addition to passport renewals.

Malaysians interested in renewing their passports will need to bring the originals and two copies of the following documents:

  • MyKad/ IC (front and back)
  • applicable visas
  • existing passport

Applicants will also need two passport photos with blue backgrounds which they can opt to take at the consulate at $10 for four photos.
